A Canadian court has fined Lafarge Canada C$200,000 for violating the country’s Environmental Protection Act in October 2019.
The company’s Bath cement plant in Loyalist, Ontario, discharged clinker dust into the environment as a result of a mechanical failure at the facility. Local residents notified the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks that the dust covered their vehicles and homes, and was difficult to remove.
Lafarge Canada reported the discharge to the ministry on October 23 and 24, 2019. During this time, the company took steps to repair the mechanical issues that caused the release of the clinker dust.
The ministry and Lafarge Canada are unaware of any permanent damage to property, the natural environment or human health.
